During the period HEARTSMAP was developed and tested, the BC Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use (CYMHSU) Collaborative developed a new ER protocol. This ER protocol consists of a set of tools to standardize the emergency approach to youth who visit emergency departments with mental health related complaints. This includes:
- a patient and family information pamphlet given on arrival
- a standardized assessment (HEARTSMAP)
- a management algorithm
- a safety plan and community communication form
The CYMHSU Collaborative endorsed HEARTSMAP as the standardized assessment tool in the early fall of 2016 and efforts were combined to plan and conduct outreach sessions. More information can be found on the Collaborative Toolbox website.
